Terry's Imprisonment Aboard the Benthos

The Trench

Terry Taylor's imprisonment aboard the Benthos is a prolonged struggle to recover freedom aboard a vessel that is both a prison and a failing refuge. Stranded on the seafloor, she tries to reach the Prometheus, but surveillance, crew intervention, and confinement repeatedly block her escape. When the ship begins to buckle under abyssal pressure, the danger shifts: even after freeing herself, Terry is trapped inside a UNIS robot and can no longer reach help. Jonas Taylor ultimately finds her and pulls her out.

The ship becomes a trap

Terry understands the danger after feeling the explosions and the Benthos's hard impact on the seafloor. She suspects that the vessel is stranded, which makes the Prometheus their only chance of rescue. But knowing where rescue might come from does not give her a route to it. Closed-circuit cameras watch the ship, and Terry recognizes that reaching the docking station without detection would be difficult both because of the surveillance and because of the crew.

Her first escape is a laborious, improvised passage through the ventilation shaft. At a cabin's bolted cover, she cannot get sufficient leverage with her arms; she turns and kicks at it until it gives way, then backs into the empty cabin. There, a white lab coat and hard hat suggest a disguise. She scrubs the makeup from her face, cuts off a lock of hair with the occupant's razor, and finds toothpaste to use as an adhesive. These ordinary objects become tools for evading the ship's systems, but they cannot make the ship safe or guarantee that she will pass unnoticed.

Discovery and renewed confinement

Terry's disguise fails when Celeste Singer finds her in a sub and removes the hard hat. Terry reacts by attacking Celeste, and Vladislav Prokovich intervenes, pulling Terry away and throwing her through the open bathroom doorway. The attempted escape has now become a direct confrontation: Terry is no longer merely trying to avoid the crew but has been exposed to them.

Prokovich binds Terry's wrists behind her back with electrical wire and seals her inside the hangar. The room is sixty by thirty feet, but its size offers no freedom; it is empty apart from six UNIS robots lined along one wall. Looking at the closed door, Terry remembers Sergei's death. The memory accompanies her recognition of what may happen next, while the wire makes that confinement immediate and physical. The hangar is not a secure refuge from the stranded ship so much as a cell within it.

Celeste's control and Terry's resistance

Celeste intensifies Terry's captivity by controlling access to the surrounding spaces. She activates the automatic entry system, leaves the control room, and locks its door from the inside before approaching Terry, who remains seated with her hands tied behind her back. Celeste frames Terry's situation through Jonas, telling her that her husband will be the one to kill her. Terry refuses to accept the provocation on Celeste's terms; her curt response offers no concession or reconciliation.

Celeste also uses the radio to address Jonas, presenting herself as grieving both Terry's loss and Benedict's and telling him that she loves him and will be there when he is ready. Jonas switches off the radio. The sequence places Celeste's composed appeal beside Terry's confinement and Jonas's refusal to keep listening, without making the radio exchange a rescue in itself. In the hangar, Terry remains bound and dependent on what she can do with the few objects around her.

Structural collapse and escape from the wire

The Benthos's failing hull changes the terms of Terry's imprisonment. She eventually uses her teeth to unravel the electrical wire and stands as the ship groans. Along the outer hull, titanium plates buckle in sequence; level B then implodes under 1,160 atmospheres of pressure. The wire that had held Terry becomes something she can defeat, but her release comes at the moment when the structure around her is becoming less survivable.

As the giant hangar doors begin to open, the abyss enters the chamber. Terry takes refuge inside a UNIS, but the robot's bulky lid turns shelter into another confinement. Trapped inside, she struggles to unscrew it in the suffocating darkness and loses consciousness. The danger is no longer a guard or locked door: it is the sealed container itself, and Terry cannot open it from within.

Rescue and the limits of escape

Jonas reaches the UNIS, lifts its lid, and pulls Terry's limp arms out of the barrel. He calls to her and begins mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. The rescue resolves the immediate captivity, but only after a series of reversals: an escape plan defeated by surveillance, a disguise exposed, a binding escaped, and a refuge that becomes a trap. Terry's imprisonment is therefore inseparable from the Benthos's physical deterioration. Every barrier that confines her is part of a ship whose structure is failing, and freedom depends at last on Jonas reaching the very container that had kept her alive only provisionally.
